Tri-booting windows 7, windows 8, and linux

There are two ways of triple booting Windows 7 + 8 + Ubuntu 11.10
1) Have Windows 8 control the booting
2) Have Ubuntu to control the booting
Windows 7 cannot boot Windows 8.

If you choose 1):
You can install Windows 8 a) to free partition or b) to VHD

If you choose 2) you have to install Windows 8 to partition or Ubuntu will not know about it.

Best would be Method 1) b) - Windows 7 and Ubuntu on partintions, Windows 8 to VHD

To install Windows 8 to VHD - there are plenty of tutorials on the internet. Follow one of them.

At this point you would have all three OS installed but only Windows 7 and Windows 8 present in boot menu.(Windows boot menu - Windows MBR)

The last step is to create an entry for Ubuntu 11.10 in Windows BCD (boot config data) store. You can use this clean and easy solution:

Copy file "/boot/grub/boot.img" from Ubuntu to Windows 7 partition - best in Windows "\" root folder. (This step can precede Windows 8 install as you have a dual boot install to start with - if later you can use the utility "ext2fsd" to access Ubuntu from Windows.)
Now create a "BootSectorLoader" in BCD and give it as "BootSectorFile" the file "\boot.img" - see here -> http://www.boyans.net look for how to create Linux loader.

Correct. You don't want to give up your Win7 install while you test the Win8 Preview (it's still pre-beta OS after all).
You can run Win8 in a VM (virtual machine) or install it as a dual boot option - Win7/Win8 choice at bootup.

So now the installation is complete and restart, updating registry. Only took 10 minutes to install. Very impressive.

The OS took up 10GB of HDD space. Only about 30 process and use 650MB for memory.

On the otherhand, what the hell is that interface?! Metro makes the OS like a web flash program. It will take me some serious behavioural adjustment to get used to it.

There is so much crap I don't need on Metro. Hopefully they give us a tick box selection on the first run of window 8 so we can select to have only the things we want fast, instead of removing them individually (may be because I am using mouse).

Hell no! I tried to ctrl+click and it wouldn't select multiple icon for me to delete. I am really stuck to removing them individually.

Got a suggestion from window asking wether I want optimisation and I went ok. Didn't give me options after that. Window took over without explaination on what it is about to do. But by the flashing HDD light, I think it is doing a defrag. I am not sure how much it helps on a VM. So this is one of those black box OS where automation require no input or explaination to the users, which I don't like. At least tell me what you are going to do. If I know it is a defrag, I won't press the OK button blindly and slows my system to a halt.

Everytime I click on the "start" icon, it brings me back to that awful Metro interface. I still haven't figure out how to change to classic view after 20 minute.

Found a solution with google. You can do it by a software which changes the registry for you or you can change teh registry yourself. Of course I am going to change the registry myself.

For anyone searching for it, it is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Chnage RPEnabled string to 0 to get rid of Metro.

But then, all of a sudden, there is this giant grey box pop-up showing my time and my network icon. I did not request for that. Must have pressed something. How do I get rid of it? It won't go away by pressing the desktop or the blank on the taskbar.

Try restart to see if grey box goes away and it does. I waited for it to restart and it is taking a long time to go to the logon page. But it appears to be my problem. I am just being stupid, the logon page was there for a long time. It was covered by a wallpaper which you have to drag over to uncover the logon screen. I feel like an idiot or should I say the GUI developer makes people feel like they are idiots or the developer themselves are idiots.

I timed it and turns out it reach the logon screen from the time I turn on the VM in 28 seconds on a 1TB 5400rpm WD Green HDD.

Win8/win7 problem

I have win 7 on 1tb drive and now i have win8 on my other 2tb drive. when i installed win8 on my 2tb drive it wrote its bootmbr on my first drive....and now when i start my comp i get the win8 boot menu. Is there a way to get rid of it without erasing the 1tb drive. i dont care about the 2tb. next time when i install win8 i will dissconnect my first drive so it doesnt write over my win7 bootmbr....

Need some Advice on Hardware

So, I'm going to start off by saying, I am not overly familiar with hardware, i know the basics, I'm a computer savvy person with a passion for computers, but i am only 18 and haven't toyed around enough with computers yet.

It was a gift for Christmas 2 years ago. back then all i did was play WoW and use it for office and internet browsing. I am however now starting a computer engineering course at a local college and am trying to upgrade my system. I am a gamer. And this rig does not let me play the new current games i want. (E.g. Skyrim/Dead island/Swtor etc.)

From what ive managed to figure out, i need a new video card because the one i have is on board.

8GB of Ram is more than enough

My Processor could be better but its not horrible.

My motherboard, im unsure about, I understand sort of how PCI and PCI-E and the other ports work for my video card, but not really.

Everything else I'm unsure of.

What do i need to spend, and what hardware do you guys recommend i buy/upgrade in order of importance.

If this computer is just junk and i would be better off starting from scratch, let me know too, I really am trying to learn more about how everything works.

My goal is to have the best gaming rig i can, however that would cost a lot of money, which i don't always have a lot of, so I'm more trying to figure out what i can do in steps to improve my current rig, if possible.

Using Windows 8 BETA as my main OS for now?

There is no beta out, only the Developers build. Personally I would not use it as a main OS until Beta is out, but I do have it on my netbook and it runs fine. I did try it on my desktop, and it works very well for something that is pre-beta, but it is not ready for prime time yet.

But yes, download it, play with it, see if you like it, but I would not depend on it for my main OS until Beta or RC1 like I did with win7.

With 1GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive I am surprised you even run Windows 7. It has to be slow.

Windows 7 runs fine with 1GB of ram with memory optimizations. The biggest hurdle will be UEFI, when and if Gigabyte ever releases UEFI updates for older boards. 80GB is enough for Windows 7, have put it on an 80GB SSD several times for clients.

Hello , I installed windows 8 on ASUS K50ID and I should installed all of my drivers one by one .

But when I installed it on my friend's Dell Inspiron 5010 , the drivers worked correctly with out any drivers installation recommended , Do you know what is the problem ?

AIM login problem on Windows 8

When I try to use the AIM program on the windows 8 developer preview it gives me a "bad username or password" error. I tried putting the old oscar server info into the connections section but I didn't have luck there either. Has anyone had any luck? I'm using pidgen for now but I'd prefer to use AIM. I am using a Lenovo X61T on a Netgear intelligent antennae series router and a verizon FIOS router with coaxial input jack for reference. (2 locations)

depends how you install it--it needs a clean install so if you only have 1 hard drive then it will wipe it--you can install it in a virtual machine using virtualbox or similar

personally i have tried it in a vm and wasnt very impressed with it --though its early days yet --it just looked like windows 7 except for the metro bit which is really aimed at touchscreens

Strange CPU and RAM Utilization by LSASS.EXE

OK. I've noticed strange and unexplained activity on my install of the W8 Dev Preview x64 edition. And I trust y'all to help me get to the bottom of it.

I have noticed, on multiple occasions in the past three weeks of testing, unexplained CPU activity (5-7%) when the system SHOULD be idle, as well as excessive network activity on the order of 1.9Mb/sec uploads and 1.76Mb/sec downloads. Not abnormal, BUT I'M NOT DOWNLOADING ANYTHING.

LSASS.EXE is now consuming over 1,270,000KB of memory! That's 1.27GB, and it's been rising the whole time I've been monitoring it this evening.

RAM use for lsass.exe now stands at 1,295,000KB. All I can say is WOW! What the heck is doing this??

Other processes that are seeing activity are System and Svshost.

I really Win8 DevPre, as it seems more stable than W7SP1x64 (was getting F4 BSODs during idle times, like overnight). I ran W8DevPre for over fifteen days with no BSODs, then had to switch back to W7SP1x64 (because for the life of me I could not network the W8 box to a W7 system on the same LAN. Would never accept my user ID and password for the other system, and I tried it both ways, multiple times...) and I got the BSOD F4 withing 24 hours. Go figure.

LSASS.EXE now at 1,354,000KB and still rising, LAN activity staying the same.

OK, I'll bite: WTF is this, man??

Can anyone shed any insight? Is this Windows Update in disguise? Are my files being hijacked or analyzed for any reason?

I've been beta testing Windows 95OSR2 thru WinXP and NEVER saw activity like this before.

I would heartily appreciate your feedback, as I certainly respect your technical experience and skillsets.

My approach had always been ..... anything before SP3 is a Beta and I wasn't going to deal with an office full of beta software in a production environment. But I have to admit, Windows 7 SP1 wasn't bad at all. At this point, I'm buying Win7 Pro and won't be looking at 8 until at least 6 months after the release date.

So I have Windows 8 on my new desktop, and wondered what happens when the Developer preview expires.
It seems it will expire March 13th or so. I imagine a new beta or even a release candidate would be rolling out
by about that time, right? But say when the official version launches, and I am still on a Developer Preview or Beta; what will Microsoft do?

Any ideas on if I (or others who got in on the Dev Preview) will have an option like the upgrade discs or anytime upgrade on 7?

Drivers Wireless adapter not found by driver installer

I am using a WG111v3 wireless USB adapter. I successfully installed it on my netbook but I have been unsuccessful installing it on my desktop.

I've tried installing drivers from the linked site, and even older versions to no avail. After driver installation, the device is not found. The device is present in hardware but is listed as unspecified and won't let me update drivers. When uninstalling the drivers, however, the uninstall program does require I remove the device before continuing.

any help would be appreciated.

Changinig my system

Boot.wim file damaged?

hi guys, about 2 days ago i started download windows 8 developer 32bit 2.8gb. And it finished today. I tried install it but says 'windows cannot copy files required for installation. The files may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available then restart. Error. i test all wim archives using 7zip. Install.wim is ok, but boot.wim is damaged. And how can i fix it. I cant redownload it because my internet is so slow. I need to fix it or download it. But i cant find boot.wim for download. :fou: Guys can u upload it or giving me fixing software?

Windows 8 is still in beta, not recommended to replace windows 7 yet..
If you want to play with windows 8, I'd recommend a dual boot configuration (using a seperate HDD).

Disconnect HDDs, except the one you plan on putting win8 on (NOT on the win 7 HDD.
Instal the beta windows 8.
Reconnect other HDDs. Leave bios Boot prioity set to the HDD with win 7 on it.
use the Hot key that prings up the boot menu.
.. On my Gigabyte MB it's F12 and on my Asrock MB it is f11.
.. Select the HDD with window 8 on it.
.. Using this does NOT change Boot Priority.
.. If in Win 8 and want to bounce back to win7, just select restart and computer will reboot back into window 7.

Probably in time for back to school sales in late summer/early fall.

If you want to get an early look - the beta version/Consumer Preview will be available for download end of the month.
You could add that to your current system in dual boot configuration to have a good look at it. Or you could run the OS in a virtual machine (VM) when ever you want to take a test drive.

Will microsoft start offering free upgrades from windows 7 soon? An example would be if I purchase the item soon, and any purchase after (insert date) allowed access to windows 8. I believe something similar was done with windows vista when windows 7 was about to be released. I don't like the idea of buying windows 7 right now if it means holding out a bit longer for 8. I could just use my much dreaded version of vista in the meantime. This kind of offer would help out people that are on the fence about wasting dough.

Is it going to Be much better than w7?

I may be thinking ahead of schedule, but it may be a good thing. I had a problem with the windows 8 UI giving so much attention to touch. What will happen to my mouse?lol

Anyways, it made me think what I could do. My question is, do you think I could go out and buy a drawing tablet and use it to navigate through the windows 8 UI? I purchase win8 (when it comes out) for my desktop computer. And have no real way of getting touch involved without spending money of a touch monitor (Which I will not do)

So, if this made any sense to you. What do you think will happen, any problems I may run into?

WIFI connection issue

I installed Win 8 yesterday, via bootable DVD in dual (tripple *cough) boot with vista (and xp). So far so good. Smooth sailing all the way, besides my DVD drive not being there once logged in (even though it installed from said drive just fine, haha). But that's not of my concern, atm.

Now to the fun part: When I want to connect to the internet via WIFI it shows all and every (it shows more than I see in Vista) available network that is around me. BUT NOT my own! :heink:

"OK, let's add it myself", I thought. I created a new connection, put in the information (it's absolutely the right one for sure) and ... nope. Still nothing there.

* the USB WIFI adapter works, as it shows WIFI networks around me, I even installed the win 7 drivers for it, just to make sure, but no difference (works just like before, didn't solve the issue)
* my router shows wrong as a "DR 6whatever", while it is a DI 524
* when I create a direct connection via cable it shows the correct router name (additionally to the wrong one ...) and the internet connection works (not the WIFI one obviously)

So I assume it's Win 8 not getting the right router, for whatever reason, didn't now that even matters. It seems like it's basically not seeing my router's WIFI at all.

So far I had no luck removing the false router and/or adding/replacing the right one. Afaik, there is no such thing as a "router driver", right?

Any ideas? :??:

Not really, unless you like the whole metro look, as thats what windows 8 gets by default, and metro, from what I have read, and tested so far, is really hard to use, and find programs on, when one is used to the whole start menu thing, if you have a strong enough PC (Quad Core + 8GBs of Memory + over 100 GBs of Disk Space), id suggest testing windows 8 in a Virtual Machine instead of risking data loss when swapping an entire OS.

Cannot play videos using Win7 IE8

I installed the latest Adobe Flash Player on my Win7 but I cannot play videos using Internet Explorer 8. The videos work fine with Firefox, and my Avant browser plays videos if I use the IE compatible mode. When I had Google Chrome installed, the videos worked with that also. What could be done to make IE8 play videos?

Purchased applications do not get downloaded in iTunes

iTunes unable to play albums in proper order

Hi guys I am using old MacBook pro in which I am using iTunes for my music library. My music library is very large it’s around 265GB and it was working perfectly. Before some days I have added some more songs to my library and after that my system has started giving me some problem. Now whenever I play any song after that it starts playing the next track randomly and it does not play any tracks in proper order. Please tell me what should I do to fix this issue.
I have gone through your problem and I think you are facing this problem because of some missing tracks In your library. It means if after updating the library if you have erased and tracks or moved any tracks from its original location then that can be a reason because if you have moved any tracks or folder then your iTunes will not able to play that tracks and it will play some other tracks. So first make sure that you have not changed any file location.
As you have said in your post that you are not able to play your tracks in proper order then I think you have to first try to solve the problem by updating the library. Because if you have added any tracks or moved any tracks and after that if you have not synchronized it again then It means your music library is not updated. So according to me you should first update the library and after that check whether same problem is coming or not? I hope this problem will be helpful to you.
I think you are facing this issue because of your shuffle is turned on and because of that iTunes playing all the tracks randomly. In iTunes you can find the shuffle option in bottom left side. In bottom left side you will see the crossed arrow button. Make sure that button is not blue. If it is blue then it means it is turned on and you have to click on that button and after that when you try to play any tracks at that time it will play all the tracks in proper order.
After reading your post I have tried to solve the problem and first I have checked that all the files are on its original location and none of the files are moved and after that I synchronized the library again, but after doing that also I am facing the same problem with my ITunes. As you have said that after turning of the shuffle option also same problem is coming then I think there is something wrong with your iTunes. According to me you should try to fix this issue by reinstalling the iTunes in your system and if that also gives the same problem then you should try to fix this issue by updating the iTunes. I think after updating the iTunes you will not get this problem and you will be able to play all the tracks properly.

I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes in my MacBook pro and after that I have installed it in my system. After doing that I restart my MacBook pro and then I have updated my whole library in my ITunes. After doing that when I play the tracks at that time it doesn’t give me any issues. Music volume is fluctuating in iTunes

I am using iTunes in my MacBook Air. I normally use my laptop for entertainment like listening music and watch movies. I was using Snow Leopard on my laptop and after that I upgraded the operating system to Lion. Now after doing that all the thing was going normally. From last some days I am facing one problem with my laptop whenever I use iTunes at that time volume starts fluctuating in my laptop. Please tell me what I should do to fix this problem.
I have gone through problem and first of all I would like to tell you that try to play music files with other applications and then check whether you are facing the same issue or not? if possible try to download any other application in your laptop like VOX music player and after that check whether same problem is coming or not? if you are not facing the same problem then I think there is something wrong with your iTunes. I have gone through your issue and I think you should try to solve the problem by following this trick. First check that sound option in your iTunes is disables. Because if the sound check option is enabled then you will keep getting this issue because of this option. First check for that option and if that option is enabled then disable it and after that check whether you are getting the same issue or not? if you want to know anything more then let me know.
If you don’t know how to disable the sound check option in iTunes then I will help you with it. To disable the sound check option in iTunes you have to first open the iTunes and after that go to the preferences. Now in preferences box click on the playback tab. I have also tried to check the same problem with other application and I found that with other application also same problem is coming. Please suggest me some more solution regarding this.
According to me you can solve this problem by doing following tricks and after that first try to solve the problem by installing the updated version of iTunes and after that check whether same problem is coming or not? if after doing that also same problem is coming then I think you have to switchback to old operating system because sometimes this kind of problems occurs due to operating system faults. Unable to find photo folder in itune

Hello friends I have recently purchased the ipod touch and I have recently installed the ITunes in my laptop in which I am running window 7. Now I am able to transfer the music and videos in my iPod touch but I am not able to find the photo folder and because of that I am not able to synchronize it. And then use it to connect your phone with the PC. And for synchronization you can have GooSync, or OggSync, or SyncMyCal, and many more if you search the internet. But only some of them are free, and for others you have to pay.

Why iTunes download update 4.3.3 fails

I am using Apple mobile phone and recently I thought of upgrading my iTunes application to a newer version, so when I tried to download the same then the download update fails. I started downloading the update again but it always fails when it is about to get complete. Hey I guess I can help you out from this solution as I was also having the same problem and after trying few things the update was successful. My problem was that synchronization was not happening between windows 7 and iPod. So I thought of updating, but for this I had disable my system firewall and then after when I used broadband internet then the again connected the iPod to the computer and what I found is I was able to do the same.

Recently my son forced me to buy a phone for him so I took an apple phone for him, because its features are nice and since I am using this product from long back. Motorola reports fourth-quarter loss

Sony and Sharp delay joint venture plans

The global financial crisis begins to take its toll: Sony Corp. and
Sharp Corp. said that they postpone formal establishment of the joint
venture that will operate 10th generation LCD fab.

Faced with changes in the world economy, Sharp and Sony amended and
extended the non-binding memorandum of understanding to confirm their
mutual intent to postpone the targeted establishment of a joint
venture until March 2010, approximately one year later than originally
scheduled. Sharp and Sony will, through continued discussions of how
the two companies can best deploy their resources and expertise,
continue to negotiate in good faith and have set June 30, 2009 as the
target date by which to enter into a definitive agreement to establish
a joint venture that will be mutually beneficial for both companies.

Despite the postponement of the joint venture, Sharp plans to start
operating its new LCD panel factory in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture
(currently under construction) by March 2010 as originally scheduled.

10th generation LCD factories will process substrates that have sides
of 3 meters or longer, whereas currently utilized 8th generation
factories process LCD substrates that have sides of 2.2 – 2.5 meters.

Background processing coming with iPhone 3.0?

Apple might be planning to allow background processing in a future
iPhone, perhaps having decided that its planned push-notification
system for the iPhone was not the best solution.

MacRumors has a report out today saying they've "heard" that Apple is
thinking about dropping its objection to having iPhone applications
run in the background at some point in the future. If you'll recall,
Apple announced last June that iPhone users wouldn't be able to run
more than one application at the same time in order to preserve
battery life and performance, which surprised developers used to
creating smartphone applications for other platforms with that
capability intact.

At present, the iPhone must automatically close most apps and only
allows certain of Apple's own services to run in the background, such
as e-mail checks and music playback. The interface is often cited as
the primary reason for the limit, as it doesn't include buttons or
shortcuts to switch apps without closing. When justifying the its
since-stalled background push notification efforts, Apple didn't
overly reject the notion of running background apps but criticized
operating systems like Windows Mobile for poor management that
necessitated a dedicated task manager to close programs.

Panasonic warns of loss, 15,000 layoffs

it will post an annual loss of $4.3 billion and said it will cut
15,000 jobs as it grapples with a stronger yen and slowing demand.

list of electronics makers stepping up restructuring in the face of a
global slump that is shaping up to be nastier than the last major
downturn in 2001 after the IT bubble.

"Sales fell in all our business segments in the third quarter. We
expect sharper sales declines in this quarter, and profits are likely
to shrink in every segment," Panasonic director Makoto Uenoyama told a
news conference.

Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi are all facing multi billion dollar losses,
crippled by the double whammy of falling sales and a strong Japanese
currency that eats into overseas profits when repatriated.

The yen's surge to a 13-year high against the dollar has also made
Japanese electronics less competitive than goods from South Korean
rivals such as Samsung Electronics, which are benefiting from a softer
won.

Panasonic said it will close 27 manufacturing sites in the current
fiscal year that ends in March and will carry out another round of
plant closures of a similar scale in the next business year.

It also plans to cut around 15,000 jobs, including both full-time
regular employees and contract workers. Half the cuts will be in Japan
and half overseas. It has a global workforce of about 300,000 regular
workers.

On top of dwindling sales of consumer gadgets, Panasonic's factory
automation equipment operations have come under pressure as companies
worldwide cut production and spending on manufacturing tools.

The company also said it will delay the start-up of its new LCD panel
plant in western Japan by six months, to July 2010.

Lim,the Primary 4 student then ported Doodle Kids to the iPhone using
GScript, a JavaScript library for Apple IIGS programmers to do web
programming.

The program lets iPhone users draw with their fingers by touching the
iPhone's touchscreen and then clear the screen by shaking the phone.

"I wrote the program for my younger sisters, who like to draw," Lim
said. His sisters are aged 3 and 5.

Lim, who is fluent in six programming languages, started using the
computer at the age of 2. He has since completed about 20 programming
projects.

NEC Electronics Sharpens Image Quality

image resolution and the high resolution of today's audio-visual (AV)
display systems. Based on the company's unique single-frame

uPD9245GJ) reduces the blurring that occurs when low-resolution images
are expanded and displayed in high-resolution. The ASSP sharpens
out-of-focus images, smoothes rough edges and refines contours by
analyzing and processing information contained in one frame of data in
real time. Using standard video interfaces for data input and output,
designers can easily integrate the ASSP into a wide variety of
consumer, industrial, medical and automotive devices that handle

Significant loss for THQ: 600 layoffs

As a whole, the video game industry has grown between 2007 and 2008,
but this success does not seem to affect everyone the same way. Thus,
while Nintendo has drawn significant benefits, other companies are in
a less favorable position.

This is particularly true of THQ, which has just announce a loss of
191.8 million (148.2 million euros) for the last quarter of its fiscal
year. A result obviously less exciting than the earnings over the same
period last year ($ 15.5 million or 11.9 million).

These figures are obviously not without consequences and THQ has
already announced the elimination of 600 positions, or 24% of its
total workforce. This restructuring has not been discussed in detail
and we do not know what areas of activity will be affected, but it is
certainly not good news.

in major metropolitan areas of India.

The study, "Why mobile advertising matters", undertaken in partnership
with TNS India that was unveiled at an exclusive event in Mumbai,
showed increasing patterns of mobile Internet use, and positive
signals for brands looking to benefit from the fast growing medium.

Nokia India, said: "People now have a social and emotional need to
stay connected 24x7 with friends, information and entertainment and
it's big news for brands that mobile web users now access the internet
through their device almost as frequently as they do through their
PC."

Findings from the research:
Mobile web users are using their mobile to access the Internet almost
as much as the traditional web (2.4 days per week versus 2.7 days)
More users are finding out about new product information via the
mobile web (28 percent) than the traditional web (26 percent)

Lenovo CEO steps down

Lenovo President and CEO William Amelio resigned Thursday after the
Chinese PC maker reported a nearly $97 million loss for its fiscal
third quarter.

Yang Yuanqing has relinquished his role as chairman to replace Amelio
as CEO, effective Thursday, the company said in a statement filed with
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing. Yang will remain as an executive
director and had served as the company's CEO until April 2005 when he
was appointed board chairman.

The announcement comes at the end of Amelio's three-year contract with
the company, Lenovo said, adding that Amelio will serve as a special
adviser until September 30.

In a separate filing with the Hong Kong exchange, Lenovo reported
losses of $96.7 million in its fiscal third quarter that ended
December 31. That compares with $172.6 million profit in the same
quarter a year earlier.

The PC maker said a market shift toward entry-level PCs, aggressive
pricing, and currency fluctuations had affected Lenovo's gross margin,
which dipped to 9.8 percent year over year. Its gross profit fell 48
percent to $354 million.

Coupled with a decline in sales, the pressure on margins resulted in
the quarter's loss, the company said.

Nvidia-based Microsoft smartphone coming?

Rumors that Microsoft will launch its own smartphones have gained
steam again, with one analyst predicting that the device may be
introduced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in two weeks.

The Microsoft-branded phone may include Nvidia's Tegra processor and a
telecommunications baseband chip from Qualcomm, wrote Doug Freedman of
Broadpoint AmTech in a report Thursday.

Microsoft already sells the Zune portable media player, among other
devices, so it isn't a stranger to the hardware business. And it has
its Windows Mobile OS, which it licenses to other phone makers. But it
doesn't yet have a smartphone of its own.

Rumors surfaced last year that Microsoft would launch a smartphone at
the Consumer Electronics Show in January, but none materialized.
Freedman now believes it will happen at MWC, which takes place Feb.
16-19 in Barcelona.Freedman goes on to say that the company is looking
to support more than just the Windows operating systems and is also
looking to support either RIM (RIMM) or Apple (AAPL).

Windows Mobile 7.0 will Come in April 2010

Giant will release the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 to manufacturers in
April 2009, while the first handsets to sport the platform are
expected to reach the market in September this year. Also, the
operating system is set to be
showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month.

While WM 6.5 will probably not bring many changes when compared to the
6.1 version, WM 7 is expected to be Microsoft's truly innovative OS.

As for Windows Mobile 7, the news stated that it should reach testers
in November this year, while the first devices to sport the OS should
be unveiled in April 2010. The software company has kept quiet in
regard to the features included in both Windows Mobile 6.5 and WinMo
7. Some rumors pointed towards gesture recognition and multi-touch
capabilities coming along with the future operating systems, yet
nothing else surfaced.

This might come from the fact that the company announced not long ago
that there would be fewer handsets running WinMo released to the
market, which means that the work relationship between Microsoft and
manufacturers has been tightened up a little.

SP2 for Vista, Windows Server 2008

The first release candidates (without numerals) for Service Pack 2 for
both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will be released to the
general public for testing next week. This after private testers with
the MSDN and TechNet services receive their copies first.

For the first time, the SP2 standalone package will be delivered to
users not according to operating system build, but to byte length. So
the 32-bit standalone service pack (302 MB with the basic five
languages, 390 MB for multi-language) will update both 32-bit Vista
and 32-bit Windows Server 2008. Then there will be two 64-bit
standalones, including one which covers x64 architectures (508 MB /
622 MB) and one for Itanium 64-bit (384 MB / 396 MB). The RC will
represent a kind of dress rehearsal for this new method of
distribution.

While the big theme for Vista SP2 has been reliability improvements,
perhaps the most prominent new operating system feature undergoing its
final round of tests will be the ability to burn to Blu-ray media
using BD-R. This is being described as "the ability to record data to
Blu-ray Disc Media," which is not exactly the same as saying "burn
high-def videos." Currently, the Ultimate version of Vista SP1 enables
users to burn recorded videos from digital video sources to DVD.
Though it's technically feasible to burn high-def videos, when they're
burned to regular DVD, they won't be all that long.

First update for Windows 7 could

Microsoft will start Tuesday several updates to Windows 7 via the
update functionality of the new operating system. The updates are
designed for the operation of the distribution system to be tested.

The beta version of Windows 7 has been launched, build number 7000, a
number of updates available. The updates are not automatically
installed, the installation will be started by the user. Microsoft is
planning up to five updates in this way to spread. Test updates will
be marked as a test and will therefore not resolve bugs, there are

Intel to Expand ULV Processor Lineup

Intel are planning a new pair of ultra-low voltage processors that
will be specially shaved down for ultraportable notebooks, according
to the latest leaked reports. The Core 2 Duo SU9600 and Core 2 Solo
SU3500 will have core speeds of 1.6GHz and 1.4GHz respectively.

By the end of March the chip maker will intro two new CPUs, namely the
SU9600 and the SU3500, with clock frequencies of 1.6GHz and 1.4GHz,
respectively. The higher-clocked SU9600 will be priced at US$289 in
1000-unit tray quantities, while the SU3500 will become available for
about US$262. The two new processors, which will join Intel's existing
lineup, will be paired with the GS45 IGP chipset.

The two components are also characterized as part of a new
reorganization of Intel's low-power line that will split it into three
distinct categories, with a single ultra low-voltage Celeron chip as
the budget model, Core 2 Solo processors at the mid-range, and Core 2
Duo as the high end. While reasons for this shift are unclear, the
company is heavily rumored as developing a new Consumer Ultra Low
Voltage processor designed for systems between $699 and $899 that
would trigger such a shift.

Intel's strategy in 2009

Intel, announced the company's strategy in the long term and the next
lines of investment.

Mr. Otellini, the processor market is being stabilized and the company
is now able to predict more accurately the amount of processors to be

$ 7 billion to expand or upgrade production facilities dedicated to

Due to overheating, DoCoMo halts BlackBerry

NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan's biggest mobile phone operator, said on Friday
it has halted sales of Research In Motion's BlackBerry Bold because
the phone can overheat while the battery is being recharged.

DoCoMo said it has sold about 4,000 high-end Bold phones, and about 30
users have complained the phone's keyboard area had heated up. The
company said it has received no reports of users getting burned or of
phones catching on fire.

"This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold
devices sold in Japan since last week and sales of BlackBerry Bold
devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter," RIM said in
a statement.

RIM said it had ruled out a battery problem, but said the root cause
is still being investigated.
